Nowadays, the term “healing” is a trendy word, and I’ve seen it being used by my students every time life in university gets tough. They would post on their social media stories and photos, being at places that are peaceful to heal. I decided to dig a little bit on understanding the term and found out that it generally refers to the process of restoring or regaining physical, emotional, or spiritual health and well-being. As a normal human being, being physically healthy may not be enough as we need to take care of our mental and spiritual health too.
Out of all the material I’ve read, the context of “healing” would strongly converge towards emotional healing. It refers to the process of addressing and resolving emotional pain, trauma, or distress. This can involve psychotherapy, counselling, self-care practices, or other approaches that help individuals process and work through difficult emotions and experiences. It encompasses a wide range of approaches and practices aimed at promoting health, well-being, and recovery. I guess that is what they needed at that time when my accounting student texted me and asked me if I would like to join them for some riverside outing in Tanjung Malim. It was just before study week, and I think it is a great idea to get them and build a lecturer and student bonding time. So I decided to join and it was one of the best moment in that semester.
After a few years in Tanjung Malim, this is the first time I’ve ventured out in exploring what Tanjung Malim eco-nature has to offer. It is known for a while now that there are countless free or even paid camping spots across southern Perak. Post MCO, people have been posting camping outings and it is a good thing. It gets people to go out and explore nature. I didn’t know exactly the location but it is along the Sungai Bernama. The map will lead to a place called Teratak Riverview and along that road, there is a lot of potential camping location. There are also some local operators offering camping space or even homestays that we can rent. The spot that I am going was about 10-15 minutes from the main road towards Teratak Riverview. The roads were ok but as we head further, the road was getting worse and worse. If you have a 4wd car I think it will manage the road condition. We came across a metal bridge that crosses over the Sungai Bernama, we parked our car by the roadside and walked our way to the spot.
The boys have everything set up, the bbq pit, food and drinks. I didn’t bring anything haha, I wish I knew earlier, at least I could belanja something la. Overall the place was nice, the water was clear and have a sandy riverbank. In some sections I think, it is quite deep but overall it was beyond expectations. At first, I thought it was a small and shallow river, it was quite wide. The place is suitable for “healing” where we can just sit back and enjoy nature. Exploring nature has been shown to have numerous benefits and promote overall better mental and physical health.
Spending time in nature can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and improve overall mood and well-being. It allows us to disconnect from the fast-paced and often overwhelming modern world, providing a sense of calm and relaxation. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature can be soothing, and help us to feel more grounded and connected to the world around us. Additionally, nature has been found to have a restorative effect on the brain, allowing us to focus better, be more creative, and improve cognitive functioning. This is thought to be because exposure to nature can help reduce mental fatigue and restore attentional capacity. The benefit will be useful for the boys, who will be getting ready for the upcoming final exam.
Overall, I have to thank all of you for inviting me to this wonderful outing. I learn two things on that day, Bernam River is nice and we can’t know someone if I don’t spend time on a personal level. Beyond that student-teacher relationship. Some of the guys are pretty quiet in class but outside, they are just normal kids. I’m glad that I joined that day, even though I have travelled 200km back and forth from my house to this place, it was worth it. I wish we could have done this earlier and gotten the whole class to join. I wish you guys all the best and be successful in life. It’s a journey there will be up and down. The key thing is to keep your head down when you are on top and look up and fight back when you are down and always move forward. Thanks, guys.
