Fakulti Pengurusan dan Ekonomi Team Building 2022

Back in August 2022, Fakulti Pengurusan dan Ekonomi, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, called its faculty members and executives to participate in a team-building program. It is part of the university’s initiative to enhance teamwork within the organization. An executive order was given to all faculty to execute the program, and all employees must comply and participate in the program. Personally, I think the team building program was a great call to kick start the year, especially after a 2-year covid-19 pandemic. Our degree students will be back in October, and classes will resume as usual through face-to-face lectures. Plus, this will be a good opportunity for some of the lecturers and executives who joined UPSI during the covid pandemic, a chance to get to know one another. I just got back from my PhD leave, and this team-building program provides a good opportunity to get to know all the people of the faculty and probably build bonding within the faculty. In fact, this is the first time such a team-building program since 2017.

Team building is a collective term for various activities used to enhance social relations and define roles within teams, often involving collaborative tasks. Team building is one of the most widely used group-development activities in organizations. A common strategy is to have a “team-building retreat” or “corporate holiday” where team members try to address underlying concerns and build trust by engaging in activities that are not part of what they ordinarily do as a team. Of all organizational activities, one study found team development to have a significant effect (versus financial measures) on improving organizational performance. Here at UPSI, lecturers have a lot of KPIs to achieve, set by the university and faculty. Most of us worked individually and focused on our own tasks, which may not be a bad thing. Imagine if we collaboratively work to achieve our KPI, that would be even better.

One of the activities was a town hall meeting with the dean of the faculty. Profesor Madya Dr Mohd Asri bin Mohd Noor shares the same aspiration that we need to work together as a team, and we should take this opportunity to get to know one another. I can only speak for myself, and I think this program is a success. I manage to get to know a lot of the guys on the faculty and build a better understanding of their passion, professional field and interest. The program was divided into two days with two specific activities.

PM Dr. Mohd Asri brief the faculty on working together achieving the faculty KPI.
Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.

Day one focuses on sports activity, and day two more on improving survival skills in the morning with more sports activity in the afternoon. The event took place at PD Sanctuary Training Camp, Port Dickson. Overall, the facility is good, the food was great, and with the budget that we have in hand, I think this location is a good choice. The camp is situated just at the border of Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. Although it is situated quite far from the main road, the location was just by the sea, and the facilities were well maintained.

The first day of the team building program was conducted by a fellow academician and his team members, consisting of Diploma students from Fakulti Sains Sukan dan Kejurulatihan. The program takes place the whole day and consists of simple sports activities in the morning, and an amazing race in the afternoon. We started off with an ice-breaking session and formed a team for the next two days. My team is named team Portugal (world cup mood this year) and consists of some similar faces from four different departments of FPE. The morning session sports activity is simple but requires the utmost concentration, collaboration and coordination among team members. Personally, I think individuals in FPE are competitive, haha, so we are up to the challenge, especially when we have the small and mighty Dr Jessnor Elmy in the team. Our team manage to win one out of all four games in the morning. The blind-crossing challenge was awesome. I have to lead the members to cross the line using nothing but words as instructions. The members were blindfolded with lots of obstacles in the course. The final activity in the morning was a balloon-cannon battle. Each team member holds a large piece of cloth and uses it as a tool to propel the water balloon to our rival. The afternoon session they held an amazing race consist of about 7-8 mini challenge and each team will be given a score after completing each challenge. Overall, we end up being the best team on day one.

All the task or activity emphasizes on teamwork.

Requires creativity to complete the task.
The surrounding is suitable for team building.

Moving on to the next day, we started with an aerobic session, guided by a local instructor. We knew today in the morning, there is a basic survival outing, and the last time I remember doing this activity was back in high school. I have done some camping, so this should be exciting. We marched towards some safe area to conduct this activity. Why the word safe? Kuala Linggi is a sanctuary for saltwater crocodiles haha. Since PD Sanctuary resort is just by the side of the sea and close to a mangrove-filled coastal area, therefore you have to be careful not to camp at the wrong spot. We have an instructor ready to brief our day’s objective. Apparently, he used to serve the Malaysian arm forces and has served the UN in Somalia. He told us his war stories during the failed US forces attacking Somalia, and he even showed us his bullet wounds, a true war veteran.

Morning activity starts with survival briefing.
Basic survival briefing by an experience instructor.
Basic knot that are important in any survival scenario.
Basic survival briefing with FPE members.

The session briefing started with understanding the basic surrounding and looking for a safe spot to set camp. Then how to search for resources, that are useful in desperate times. Obviously, in those challenging times, we have to make use with we have to ensure we increase our survival rate. He even showed us how to set a booby trap to catch wild animals, like snakes, monitor lizards, monkeys… The interesting part was that he showed us how to cook rice in a water bottle. This is something new that I learn. You can basically boil water in a plastic water bottle. You can argue if the food is contaminated with plastic material, but in a dire situation, this is fine. So, we move out and search for our camp spot. We set up camp, get things rolled out like fire and prepare our meal. In the end, we made one mistake, our camp is not ideal because it was infested with ants so next time got to look more proper place.

Dr. Mad Ithnin team and his innovative fireplace haha.. Next Level hehe

Nothing much in the evening session, participants can do kayaking or flying fox zipline. I didn’t join and just sleep in the afternoon because I need to travel to Rompin in the evening. The team-building outing ended with a BBQ dinner and a prize-giving ceremony. Big shout out to the FPE management who work hard in setting up this outing, this could not have been a success without their effort.  PD Sanctuary Outdoor Training Camp Port Dickson services is really good and the staff is really helpful. At least the rooms are in good condition, the activity is interesting, the food is good and the surrounding was relaxing. Hopefully, in the future we can do a similar outing, well… teamwork makes the dream work.
