The Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia (KPT), in collaboration with the IPT Sports Councils (MASUM, MSP, MASKOM and MASISWA), took the initiative to organize SUKIPT (Higher Education Institution Sports) starting in 2012. The organization of this tournament is held biannually and alternates with the organization of the Malaysian Educational Institution Sports Carnival (SIPMA). For the organization of the third edition, the contingent of invitations for this tournament is supplemented by international invitations involving countries in Southeast Asia as well as competing in several sports events for athletes with disabilities (OKU).

The organization of SUKIPT is an effort of the Ministry to develop and advance sports at the IPT, national and international levels in an integrated manner. Participation in this sport is open to all IPT athletes in Malaysia. The organization of SUKIPT 5th Edition 2022, among others, aims to continue the continuation of SUKIPT which has been organized three times in giving a wider space to IPT athletes to compete in a competitive and open sports tournament. The 5th edition of SUKIPT 2022 is held from 15 to 23 August 2022 at Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, Perak.

The scale of the event is massive, with a total of 10,000 individuals consisting of athletes, officials and volunteers combined. There are a total of 66 higher learning institutions, competing in 21 sporting events. This includes athletics, swimming, soccer, archery, hockey and other common sporting category. It will be the first major sporting event in UPSI after the Covid-19 pandemic, and I believe it is a much-needed event to get our lives in the academic realm to kick start again. Over the past few months, I’ve been teaching my classes online, and it is not the same when you have people around the campus. SUKIPT just brought UPSI to life again…

It was great to see the involvement of individuals and volunteers in working very hard to make this event a success. Two of my accounting students, Amir, Irwan and Rama, volunteered in becoming officials for the event. SUKIPT offers students from other learning institutions the opportunity to be part of the event and be in UPSI for two weeks. A great way to spend their semester break and earn a bit of money in the process, but for me, it’s the opportunity to meet and get to know other people is pretty priceless. At least for the young generation, they deserve this after two years of lockdown. It is a great way to build their confidence and be part of something big. Face-to-face communication has been missing over the past 2 years and SUKIPT was the thing the student needed.

As the days progress, I was called to be part of ‘Kajian Impak SUKIPT Terhadap Sosioekonomi Di Daerah Muallim’. Dr Rosmini was setting up a team to collect data from visitors and athletes, and I took the opportunity to gain more experience in any research activity. It was a straightforward research, focusing on investigating the social-economic impact of SUKIPT in Tanjung Malim. We were targeting 500 respondents, and we manage to exceed the target on the last day. One thing is for sure, there was a limited number of visitors for SUKIPT. Most of the visitors travel together with the athletes and only a handful from Tanjung Malim. It’s a pity, because there is no ticket required to watch the sporting event, and I think there is limited exposure of the event to the local community.

Participation as a respondent is voluntary. The questionnaire was used to obtain feedback and views, related to the respondent’s spending practices and patterns. All feedback given is confidential, and the head researcher is fully responsible for ensuring that the data obtained is only for research use, and the publication of the result from this study will only be reported in general without identifying any respondents specifically. By the time you read this, we are still compiling the result and getting ready to finalise the article to present our findings.

I have been stationed at the Chess, Taekwondo and Ping Pong events. Manage to talk to a lot of athletes and some visitors supporting their friends and families. It was a great experience and was quite excited watching the competition, especially Taekwondo. Overall, our athletes perform really well and receive a lot of support from home fans. If you look at the full result, UPSI manages to collect the third highest medal tally behind champion UPM and runner-up UITM. Most of the time, they were able to compete and made it to the podium. Winning was another matter la eh, because I’m sure the competition was tough and they have given everything they can to make their university proud. To all the participants and winners, thank you so much for making UPSI proud, and hopefully, more great things to come in the future.
