Urban Farming, A Potential Solution to Food Security in Malaysia.

Urban Farming, A Potential Solution to Food Security in Malaysia.

Food essentially is a significant source of energy and nutrition for a human being. Over the past millennia, humans have learned and adapted to source food from foraging and hunting their environment before moving towards agriculture to increase their survivability. Today food security has become a global challenge due to several prominent factors. Climate change, growing global population, rising food prices, war, global pandemic, and environmental stressors, have challenged human capabilities in sustaining food security.

United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security has defined food security as the ability of all people, at all times, to have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life. Based on the definition and global challenges, there is a need to look deeper into food security issues and opportunities. The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) provide an in-depth understanding of the current state of food security. The index is a dynamic quantitative and qualitative benchmarking model constructed from 58 unique indicators that measure the drivers of food security across both developing and developed countries.

Urban farming is becoming a viable option to solve the food security issue.

Malaysia scored 71 in the GFSI index, marginally above the global average of 68. Malaysia was listed 39th in overall standing and 7th in the Asian region. Despite the average score, Malaysia has gained a 5.1% increase in the index from 2020 to 2021, the highest among 113 countries. Despite a significant increase in ratings, the index exposed a weakness in Malaysia’s ability to adapt to changing climate and susceptibility to natural resource risks. Poor adaptability will contribute to the incidence of food insecurity in the country. Over the mainstream media, countless news of food shortages, price hikes and dependencies on food import has put pressure on low-income families. The severity of the issue needs to motivate the community to explore new opportunities to reduce food shortages and suggest urban farming as a potential solution.

Urban farming involved horticulture, animal culture, aquaculture, and other practices for producing fresh food or other agricultural products. The ground-breaking practice utilizes space in an urban setting. The development of underutilized space farming will generate value or output that will be beneficial to the owner or society. On a household scale, urban farming will reduce the family reliance on commercial agricultural produce and imported foods. Therefore, reducing family expenditure and promoting appreciation of gardening activity.

Urban farming can be upscale to develop and support a more extensive implementation. It can coexist with smart cities as it is related to urban economies, culture, science, and technology. The adoption of urban farming indicates that a city’s economic development has reached a higher level. Efficient development and utilization of urban space can improve the ecological environment of a city. The concept can effectively increase the green area and expand food production capacity, and indirectly, reduce urban pollution and carbon footprint.

Vegetables provide nutrients vital for the health and maintenance of your body.

There are many different approaches to urban farming suitable for small- and large-scale settings. Backyard and balcony gardening is small-scale urban farming that is feasible to be implemented in general household areas. The setup is suitable to produce daily horticulture produce that supports household consumption. Fruits, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic are potential crops that can be easily planted in pots and vases. Household users can manually manage small-scale gardens on a routine basis.

A more advanced urban farming setup is in a form of aquaponics and hydroponics. It is a systematic system that couples aquaculture with hydroponics. The nutrient-rich aquaculture water is fed to hydroponically-grown plants, where nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into nitrates. Plants will consume nitrates for growth, and the cycle will continue, creating sustainable horticulture and aquaculture produce. A variety of freshwater fish species such as Tilapia, Catfish and Freshwater Barramundi are potential aquaculture produce. Therefore, expanding the range of produces to support local consumption.

Larger or commercial-scale urban farming transform underutilized space to create more cultivation areas. Spaces such as roof-top, empty floor space or other commercially available spaces offer a new opportunity for urban farming. It requires intensive use of capital, facilities, technology, and labour to take advantage of readily available infrastructure to support and grow market-oriented agriculture. An increasing number of companies and researchers have become involved in urban farming, successfully producing fresh food and other products sustainably. Urban agriculture is being seen as an emerging business opportunity in urban areas.

The vertical farming concept shifts conventional agriculture to better-utilizing space.

One of the best approaches to instil urban farming knowledge is to disseminate it through students. This approach holds potential benefit as a starting point to help transform the social mindset to make use of available space to produce horticulture products. Whether it is implemented as a household project or commercialization, both pathways will improve the nation’s adaptability to climate change and natural resource risks. New knowledge must be explored and shared to unleash urban farming’s full potential to help Malaysians enhance and improve food security. Adapting to the new concept in the next cycle of human revolution is crucial to ensure our survivability and reach a new level of social development.
